Abstract

Disposing of textile dyes into water bodies without proper treatment poses significant environmental and health hazards. While existing adsorption methods for dye removal are effective, they are often costly. This study investigates the potential of sweet corn cob as a sustainable and cost-effective adsorbent for removing Cibacron Red dye, a commonly used textile dye for nylon and wool. The adsorption process was evaluated using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a maximum wavelength of 542 nm. The findings indicate that the adsorption capacity of corn cob was significantly enhanced after activation with 0.3 M hydrochloric acid, with an optimal contact time of 180 minutes at an adsorption temperature of 50 °C. Under these conditions, the adsorption capacity reached 0.9237 mg/g of corn cob cellulose. The adsorption mechanism is attributed to cellulose's -OH functional groups, which facilitate dye binding. Additionally, increasing the acid concentration resulted in improved adsorption efficiency. These results suggest that sweet corn cob can be an effective and eco-friendly alternative adsorbent for Cibacron Red dye removal. Reducing dye concentrations in wastewater contributes to safer environmental disposal and supports sustainable waste management practices. © 2026 Author(s)
