Black liquor is one of by-products in the synthesis of bioethanol from Palm Oil Empty Fruit Bunch (POEFB). The black liquor contains lignin-cellulose that has natural antioxidant activity even without the help of gamma irradiation in which, generally, the antioxidant activity is proportional to the number of radicals within the lignin. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of gamma irradiation dose on the number of radicals in lignin irradiated under air atmosphere condition and at variations dose of 0 and 75 kGy. The measurement of radicals, qualitatively and quantitatively was measured using an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) instrument. It was identified that the type of radicals is phenoxy radicals (phenyl-O-) i.e., a singlet peak spectrum. This type of radical is known to be stable or in other words can maintain its lifetime dependence on the sample storage temperature, thus the stability of the number of radicals was also investigated. The storage temperatures were varied at room temperature 25, -20, -40 and -80 ◦C. The results showed that the storage temperature greatly affects the number of radicals, the lower the storage temperature the more stable the free radicals contained in lignin. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
