Investigation of variation of inner blade height of the five blade runner on the kaplan turbine against turbine power

Abstract

The Kaplan turbine is a water-driven turbine. A low head is required to run this turbine. A turbine designed to get maximum power the design must be seen from the turbine runner construction to get optimal results. This study aims to find the construction of 5-blades runner with variants of the inner blade profile height of-5 mm, parallel, +5 mm, +10 mm, and +15 mm from the outer blade profile height to obtain power efficiency. The gross head is 5.25 m, the water discharge is 0.125 m³/s, the theoretical power is 6.1312 kW. The first step is to design the blade profile using NACA 2412, then test the strength of the blade profile material using software and a flow test using flow simulation software. The simulation results show that the runner blade RB-4 variant produces the best power and efficiency. During the momentary stop condition, it generates a power of 5.85360 kW with an efficiency of 95.47% and in a rotating condition, it generates apower of 6.07732 kW with an efficiency of 99.12%. © 2024 Author(s).
