This study aims to examine the relationships between recycling innovation, circular economy practices, public participation, and social resilience in urban areas using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected through a survey with questionnaires distributed to 400 respondents in urban areas of Banten Province, Indonesia, which have actively implemented recycling programs. PLS-SEM analysis was conducted to test the direct and indirect effects among recycling innovation, circular economy, and social resilience, as well as the mediating role of public participation in strengthening these relationships. The key findings indicate that recycling innovation significantly enhances social resilience through circular economy practices, with public participation serving as a crucial mediating factor. This study contributes to the field by providing an empirical model that integrates both social and technological dimensions within circular economy systems and social resilience, differentiating it from prior research that primarily focuses on environmental and economic aspects. The originality of this research lies in its context-specific analysis of urban communities in Banten Province and the use of SEM to explore complex interactions between these constructs. The results offer practical implications for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to promote technological innovation and inclusive community engagement to strengthen social resilience through circular economy initiatives. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
