Covid-19 pandemic has hampered the professional-level learning process of clinical clerkship students in teaching hospitals. Opportunities to learn about visual acuity examination gradually decrease. This study compared the learning outcomes of clinical clerkship students upon online and offline visual acuity examinations in the ophthalmology department of teaching hospitals. It employed mixed methods. A total of 23 clinical clerkship students underwent online and offline methods of visual acuity examination. The difference between the two methods was measured using statistical analysis while their opinions were analyzed qualitatively. It found a significant difference in refractive examination learning outcomes between online and offline methods (p-value=0.000). The satisfaction level of clinical clerkships with online learning methods was 90% or above. They believe that online systems could improve knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Online methods were perceived to suit them for recalling and practising before meeting patients in the hospital. Although the Covid-19 pandemic had changed many things within the learning process of clinical clerkship students in the teaching hospitals, the mixed online and offline learning of visual acuity examination was reasonably satisfactory. Future researches were expected with a larger population and broader scope. © 2023 Author(s).
