Abstract

Challenges are faced by maritime education programs in Indonesia in meeting the demands of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) era, especially in the equipping of graduates with advanced technical and analytical skills. This study evaluates curriculum gaps in ocean data analysis, programming proficiency, and interdisciplinary competencies among institutions accredited as Good, Very Good, and Excellent. A comprehensive review of academic databases, industry reports, and policy documents from 2013 to 2023 revealed a discrepancy between the skills of graduates and the needs of the industry. The study revealed shortcomings in data science integration, limited emphasis on sustainability practices, and insufficient industry collaboration. Tackling these issues is essential to propelling breakthroughs, competitiveness, and environmentally responsible ocean stewardship under the BRI. The review recommends implementing modular curriculum improvements, prioritizing faculty development, and encouraging public–private partnerships.
