Abstract

Both would-be and practicing seafarers need good physical fitness as they face one of the most high-risk jobs. For the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific, physical fitness is one of the qualifications for acceptance. This paper presents the evaluation of a six-week physical fitness training program designed for probationary cadets aspiring to take maritime undergraduate degrees at the Academy. A training program with gradual progression was developed, focusing on endurance, strength, speed and flexibility. We used the physical fitness test results (push-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach, 3.2-km run, flex hang and pull-ups) as indicators of the effectiveness of the program. There is statistically significant evidence to say that the program caused the improvement on the scores of the students in terms of endurance, strength and speed. Moreover, the program can still be enhanced by adding more exercises addressing flexibility. © 2019 IEEE.
