A Low-Power Retrofit RFID-Vibration-GSM Security System for Traditional Motorcycles: Design, Implementation, and Experimental Evaluation

Abstract

Motorcycle theft remains a pressing issue, particularly for older, traditional motorcycles that lack built-in security features found in modern models. This study presents an advanced Arduino-based Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) security system, specifically designed to protect traditional motorcycles by integrating RFID authentication, vibration detection, and real-time alert mechanisms. The system employs an RFID recognition module (Mifare RC522) with a 4 cm detection range, ensuring secure and efficient tag authentication. A SW420 vibration sensor is incorporated to detect unauthorized movements, triggering an alarm system composed of an LED indicator and buzzer when tampering occurs. The SIM800L GSM module enables real-time notifications to the motorcycle owner via SMS in case of a security breach. Power consumption analysis shows stable operation, with 4.50 Volts in standby mode and 4.43 Volts during authentication. Experimental results confirm a 100% success rate in detecting authorized tags and identifying unauthorized access, with zero false positives. By offering an affordable, retrofit security solution without requiring significant modifications to traditional motorcycles, this system provides a bridge between vintage models and modern anti-theft technology. The findings highlight the potential of this security system to enhance the safety of traditional motorcycles, supporting vehicle owners in protecting their assets against theft. © 2026 IEEE.
