Future technical skill: Level of readiness in automotive engineering students

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of readiness of automotive engineering students in mastering Future Technical Skills in Indonesia. The study involved 250 final-year students from one university and one polytechnic divided into two groups: bachelor students and diploma students. The aspects of future technical skills measured include Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Driving, Electric Drives, Vehicle Electrification, Engine Repair, and Vehicle Maintenance. The results of the study show that bachelor students have a higher readiness to master more advanced skills, such as Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Driving, Electric Drives, and Vehicle Electrification. In contrast, diploma students show better readiness in practical skills such as Engine Repair and Vehicle Maintenance. These findings reflect the difference in curriculum focus between bachelor's and diploma programs, where bachelor's programs emphasize more on theory and analysis, while diploma programs focus more on practical training. The conclusion of the study is that although bachelor students are better prepared to face future automotive technology, diploma students have an advantage in practical skills that remain relevant in the automotive industry. It is recommended that educational programs balance theory and practice to prepare graduates who are better prepared to face future industry challenges. © 2025 Author(s).
