Effect of Mold Temperature and Shred Size on Mechanical Properties of Plastic Bottle Cap Recycling for Produce Aesthetic Parts

Abstract

This study discusses the effect of mold temperature and flake size on the mechanical properties of materials produced from plastic bottle cap waste. Plastic waste is one of the major environmental problems, and recycling it into value-added products is one of the potential solutions. In this study, plastic bottle cap waste which is a polymer element of one element or a combination of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has properties that are difficult to decompose in the environment, but still has several opportunities to be recycled. And here polymer of waster is divided into two categories in thermoplastics and thermoset. This plastic waste is into thermoplastics group and it can be recycled processed into new materials by varying the mold temperature and flake size. Tensile and compressive tests were carried out on samples with variations in mold temperature. The same test was carried out on various flake sizes. Macrostructural observations were carried out on the fracture surface. The results of tensile and compressive tests show that there is a relationship between variations in mold temperature and flake size on the tensile and compressive strength of recycled plastic bottle cap materials. These findings provide important insights into optimizing the plastic waste recycling process to produce aesthetic components for decorative walls or floors with desired mechanical properties. © 2025 Widener University School of Civil Engineering.
