Extraction of Polyphenols from Garcinia forbesii King Leaves for Clay Mask and Serum Formulation Using Microwave Extraction Method and Antioxidant Activity Testing

Abstract

Garcinia forbesii King is known to have antioxidant and anti-elastase activities, which can potentially prevent premature ageing and improve skin elasticity. Based on this potential, this study developed a clay mask preparation using Garcinia forbesii King extract and evaluated its antioxidant activity. Extraction was performed using the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) method with variations in ethanol solvent concentrations (50%, 70%, 96%) and extraction times (5, 10, 15 minutes). The extract was characterized using GC-MS and FTIR, while antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH method at a wavelength of 515 nm with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The research results show that the extract with the best phenolic content was obtained using 50% ethanol as the solvent with an extraction time of 15 minutes. GC-MS characterization identified 3-Allyl-6-methoxyphenol, while FTIR analysis indicated the presence of O-H, C-H, and C-O groups supporting the existence of phenolic compounds. The IC50 value of the 50% ethanol extract at an extraction time of 15 minutes was 30.373 μg/mL (very strong), the IC50 value of the clay mask was 56.69 μg/mL(strong), and IC50 value of the serum was 56.38 μg/mL (strong). In conclusion, the ethanol extract of Garcinia forbesii King, clay mask and serum preparation show good antioxidant potential, potentially preventing cell damage due to oxidative stress. The research can continue testing the preparation's physical, chemical, and microbiological stability and clinical trials of the clay mask preparation. If the potential shows good effectiveness in the product, further development of other cosmetic formulations can be carried out. © IJASEIT is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International License
